About Phenylephrine Hydrochloride
Mechanism of Action
Phenylephrine hydrochloride is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic agonist that primarily acts on vascular smooth muscle. By stimulating alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, it causes vasoconstriction, leading to increased systemic vascular resistance and elevated blood pressure. This mechanism makes it effective as a decongestant and in managing hypotension during anesthesia.
Indication
Indicated as a decongestant for temporary relief of nasal congestion due to colds, allergies, and hay fever, and for the relief of sinus congestion and pressure.
